Leaders from the Asssociation of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, are assembly in Laos on Wednesday with a brand new peace plan for Myanmar on the agenda. The nation is within the grip of a civil conflict after the navy junta seized management in a coup in 2021.
One of many teams preventing the regime is the Arakan military in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. Rohingya refugees who’ve fled the area say they’re being forcibly recruited into the conflict. One of many so-called ‘recruiting’ grounds
is Cox’s Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh, from the place DW’s Arafatul Islam studies. We’re defending the identities of those that’ve talked to us.
Our Asia-Pacific bureau chief Georg Matthes spoke with Lina Alexandra of the Heart for Strategic and Worldwide Research in Jakarta, about what promise these talks maintain for ending Myanmar’s civil conflict.

1. Myanmar crisis had turned into a full-blown civil war;
2. Crisis could become slaughter house (typical of Cambodia's 'Killing Fields' 45 years ago with 1.7 million killed);
3. Crisis could pull in two contending super powers (US, China) effecting the region, typical of Vietnam War 50 years ago;
4. ASEAN Region surely will be affected with instability.
NB: It would be naive for ASEAN to sleep on this Myanmar Crisis.
No asean country will risk involvement in myammar that brings no benefit to the particular asean country
fast Myanmar🇲🇲 recognise Palestine country in UN. like Thailand, China, Laos recognised 2 country (Israel & Palestine). 🤲
UN need action. stop ongoing war in Myanmar, Mali, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Somalia, Ukraine, Georgia, Cyprus, Kosovo, West Sahara.
Bangladesh is a new love of DW ❤❤
Rohingya are not from Myanmar. I am against Myanmar Junta. Just to make sure.
No Myanmar better return all ethnic land.
No return land means no peace no negotiation
Asean has no real impact, and rebel is losing..
As a Myanmar citizen, there is no a friend country in the Asean including India and China.
We don't hope anything from Asean and UN. We will rely on ourselves.
ASEAN cant help Myanmar, if they help, they will be the same Vietnam 1979, UN call VN invade Cam, but we not. And UN, US no sorry to VN up to now
In ASEAN, only Thailand and Singapore are democracies.
And nobody talks about this conflict? There are no "Donate for Myanmar", no "the Children of Myanmar are suffering" adds popping out ?
So Myanmar army control Bangladesh too.
If Thailand democracy thrives,maybe yes.
ASEAN is cheating!
China is the problem for Myanmar.
It is actually way too late for a peace plan. The junta do not deserve a peace plan. They have taken thousand upon thousands of civilian lives and they pay for their crimes against the people of Myanmar. Letting the junta have a peace plan is an insult to the people who have died for the cause of having a federal democratic government. Unless ASEAN wants to aid the people to win the civil war once and for all in the name of a Democratic Federal Republic, i'd suggest ASEAN to not involve in our country's affair.
Short answer: "No"
Araka Army & Bamma Army Are same racist against Rohingya .Rakhine &Bamma Are torturing ‘killing ‘force relocation and much more since 1942
No way because most of ASEAN leaders are friend with dictator Burmese army, chief Min aung Lai
This is a terrible video addressing the issues …
SCS is over hype i think target of china is the mainland ASEAN this country in under develop more minerals to gain and of course strategic location for china they can bypass malacah strait
ASEAN block has a unique constitution clearly stated that it won't interfere its member states's internal affairs/issues😅 I don't think it can help Myanmar's crisis.
When is the United Nations going to demand an immediate cease fire ?
Asean can do nothing
If we know, the junta is also smart to know.
No trust in ASEAN alone. China can do something and India also will be in this Peace situation.
ASEAN is inutile, useless group… Cant even stand for themselves. See whats happening in south china sea, they cant even create a unified front on China's claims on their countries' territories.
ASEAN nations,unlike European countries,they don’t have that commitment to help each other,when one country is in crisis. Cambodia’s sovereignty has violated and encroached by neighboring countries, and there’s no ASEAN member willing to budge on the aggressor or convene the meeting to find solution. There’s no respect from these powerful neighbors. ASEAN has no merit as an organization.
Every time ASEAN find a solution to Myanmar. The Western world create criticism and threaten sanctions and tariff against it. So yes ASEAN can fix Myanmar as long as the West does not interfere in ASEAN internal affairs.
Rohingya have the right to return to their land
NO , they are all the same.
The conflict in Myanmar involving various ethnic and political groups does require an inclusive dialogue approach to achieve peace. ASEAN as a coordinator and moderator is the right step because it has a non-interventionist approach but still supports stability in the region.
Dialogue between warring factions, be it from the military, ethnic groups, or other political parties, is very important to achieve a sustainable peace consensus. Peace in Myanmar will not only create political stability but also provide a basis for economic development and the welfare of society as a whole.
In addition, resolving ethnic conflicts is the main key to national unity. Without resolving this problem, the desired peace will not be fully achieved because the conflicts that occur are often rooted in ethnic dissatisfaction and cultural differences and political rights.
If the dialogue you mentioned is successful, Myanmar has great potential to become a united, stable, and prosperous country, with people living in harmony without tension between ethnicities.
That is Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army- ARSA, not Arakan Army. ARSA is a terrorist group currently collaborating with Myanmar Military Army. But Arakan Army, AA is boldly fighting against the Myanmar junta.
How and who grabbed this man? Very interesting and funny story. 😂
😅😅😅😅
The news only covered what happened to Rohingya in Rakine state stating they are (allegedly) actively recruited to the military. The same recruitment is all over the country, which the very issue all Burmese people is facing. Please tell the world about the whole story.
Media can play a large role in portraying that the human rights violations of the military junta, the one they are hiding and want to escape accountability, is that soldiers raped women, tortured them and murdered them.
Poor Buddest Myanmar people
ASEAN has vested interests in the military's retention of power. make no mistake.
Honestly, ASEAN is totally hopeless in solving Myanmar's problems. Some of the ASEAN countries are not democratic at all and they don't even bother to hide it. Myanmar's people can only count on themselves to solve their country's problems. ASEAN has no influence over the junta, the resistance fighters, or ethnic armies.
Never!
The Rohingya were getting attacked even under Aung San Suu Kyii
