Hey Todd you love it there. Implement all of that stuff just because of a few bad roads and watch how the cost of living goes up. I am paying $200 AUD a week to stay in my unpowered tent in a caravan park. Don't winge about the roads. They are just as bad in Australia.
Todd as always informative
Sadly most governments these days are corrupt
Remember taxation was supposed to be a temporary measure in ww2
Laos government put all the money into their pockets that's why all the roads were bad shape.
Keep it like that. Who wants to live like the police state west
I was just there and the road has deteriorated so much since the last time I've been there in late 2022. There's talk of a highway connecting Xieng Khouang and Luang Prabang to Vientiane. I hope thats put into production soon. Driving in Laos is a nightmare is you suffer from motion sickness.
Corruption or excuses up and down the line.
Todd you can easily remove those windows tint stickers 3 M or whatever brand you put on your windshield with nail polish remover or paint thinner. It doesn't annoy you? Cheers mate.
It's like that in every country in the world to a degree. Harriet and I lived in Boston, Ma. U.S,. until we moved to Virginia , , they built a road project that started at hundreds of millions and ended at around 4 billion . The project was called " The Big Dig in Boston" Imagine the cost of repairing your vehicle . All the best Guys ππ Jim and Harriet
Todd, when our president Clinton is in office, for his eight years term. He gave 2 millions a year for lao government to fix all the roads and country. When our president Obama was in office, he gave 90 millions to laos government to fix all that. You know where the money goes ?
Pocket only. The government in laos don't want to fix the country, don't want to create job for the people. They want the people to be poor so they can control, I glad I'm a American now.
All the beautiful temples in laos and government houses are built by France except general vang pao house is built by the United States
Country side/highlands don't have a large population so paving the roads is ignored. They could pave the main roads in the highlands but it will be hard to maintain due to lack of funding. Monsoon will wipe away the roads in 1-2 seasons. It can be done but I think the first items of business should be to teach the people to drive, enforce speed limit, and ticket and fine people. For the love of God, don't pile 20 people into a mini-van. Traffic signs in Laos are non-existent. Thanks to USA for GPS and Google Map. The country is doom. China is being burned daily, the country relies too much from China.
The lao government sold the country to china,so is up to the chinese people to fix laos or not.
Be careful what you wish for mate. The leadership of Laos monitor social media very closely. They dont take kindly to criticism. I would just bite the tongue. It is out of your control, so I would just let it go. Why do you want to impose Western standards on Laos? In one video you are mad at new roads in Vang Vieng and now you are mad here because of the complete opposite.
i january i took the mini van from Vang Vieng to Luanag Prabang, , i got still pain in lower back ..
Chill out Champ. Just keep doing what you are doing and dont stress over things you cant control. Low to no taxes for the locals is a good thing. You know how roads get fixed. Neighbors pitch in and fund it themself. Out in the country, you wont find that. Just some advice, I would ease up on the criticism of the government. You are dealing with the Lao government. You arent in Australia any more.
How are you going to raise taxes from a population of poor people? The average annual income in Laos is around $2,150 USD Besides that, do you really want to impose a tax system like in America or Australia? That is one main reason we are moving out of Washington State. Excess taxation. Just a suggestion, but for the amount of money you spend on fuel, couldnt you fly to some of your northern destinations?
laos owes a lot of debt to china just like a bunch of other countries did. they have no choice those mining companys will strip that entire country clean if they have to. your suggesting slavery to big brother so you can drive in comfort. even the best roads need maintenance
I'll take the run-down roads of Laos over the traffic nightmares of most cities now. Just a thought; the companies that sell gas in Asia and Laos should help rebuild the roads as they want people driving their cars and they are rich enough to help with improvements. I'll keep riding my bicycle.
Something that I may not have conveyed clearly in this video is that I'm not having a go at the Lao Government, not at all. I'm quite happy with how things are here, and the last thing I want to see is all those different types of revenue raising systems introduced here that are screwing the everyday punter back home. My dig is at those people who choose Laos to live because of the very cheap cost of living but endlessly complain because they don't have first world infrastructure. I was just pointing out why and how developed countries can have good roads compared to Laos. Do you really think your developed country would have such great roads without all the taxes, levies and revenue raising that goes on…?
Blessed love to all, Great video as usual bro, ahahahaha we have the same problem down here in Jamaica west Indies, poor government, thieving government, rascal government, All the government members do is pack their bank book, Watching from Jamaica west Indies !!.

If you remember, President Obama gave 90 million dollars to Laos to rebuild that country. Thatβs a lot of MONEY. Wonder where it all that went.
Tax
Just for the record, here in Washington State, one of the most heavily taxed states in America. We are taxed on roads through a gas tax, property tax and income tax. And we still have some really shitty roads with potholes and broken freeways and bridges. High taxes to fix roads doesnt always work. I will take Laos system any day over our system. With the train, the new freeways and scooters and tuk tuks, getting around in Laos is a no brainer. I forgot to mention the great Mekong River with boat travel., I will take Laos as it is. No complaints here. Modern infrastructure is overrated, in my opinion.
Hey buddy love your channel. You nailed it corruption. Too bad nice country but not much to offer expats..poor infrastructure no real services and prohibited service for most guys retire there..they need revenue best way is get guys to retire and spend money..but if a guy makes a mistake there and it's just awfull ..I hope they get smart ..get money comming in help with poverty and everything else that country needs..I like your trips giving to the poor ,and the guy that donated to the school ,brilliant..nice people there just gotta get people ,not just backpackers guys with money help that country..love you guys great family
Simple fix mate. Fine everyone a dollar that doesnβt have a functional tail light on their motorcycle and use that money. Theyβd raise squillions ππ
Be careful what you wish for mate . More government , means more taxes, which means , you know already.
Iβd much rather drive on dirt roads than have, more government, with more control.
I lived in SE Asia for 8 years .
More government = less freedom.
Thanks for everything you guys do !
A wonderful thing for your efforts. LOVELY.
Todd youβre very right about road in Laos!! ππ
Alot of the roads are in disrepair, mainly because it was poorly built in the first place then you have 10-12 wheelers going through the local roads. Banging it up as they go along.
I was shocked on how good the road was in Pakse going to Paksong. Lots of tolls but was glad to pay it because on the maintenance of the roads there.
The roads are stuffed because of the china railway .cement trucks from kunming to bang Kok for three years during covid lockdown
Seems very short-sighted of the government. If the trucks are ripping up the roads, they should pay a levy to have them fixed. Trucks could go twice as fast on decent roads and they'd make twice as much money, so they should be happy to. The whole thing just looks like a total lack of government doing its job. (You could easily argue the our government does way too much, but doing nothing isn't great either.)
Thanks Todd. You are right when you say that there just isn't the money or the infrastructure. Plus the fact that Laos is being milked dry by the Chines who just don't care about the people of Laos, only the fruit and veg that they can supply to China! Laos is a beautiful country, but still a poor one and one has to accept that if you want to live there. Personally I would rather have the lack of infrastructure and a great way of life than be taxed through the nose. God bless you and the gang πβ€π
Roads have not been improved in the last 49 years, which should have been priority to anything else. Corruption is in plain sight, but people have no voice, that's communism for you.
talk about corruption. the usa has given laos around 200 million dollars to clear unexploded bombs. how much of that money was spent on that vs how much was spent on lavish homes and high end cars. the lao government don't give a sh@@ about the conditions the people endure let alone the condition of the roads.
I was amazed at how good the road was that you took recently that Google Maps did not recognize as a road. It seems to me, as a long-time resident, that the government has wisely picked quantity over quality. I see villagers who were cut off during the rainy season who are now able to sell new types of crops because there are bridges for produce buyers to use. Most of your negative commenters about the government will not have seen that.
This might be the price of freedom and not being controlled by government and hopefully it will last long there is complete government control freedom is partly gone wrong and takes away part of your freedom, small price to pay having a bad road surface.
Roads are worse in Australia, politicians waste money on shit π.
Mina's pulling faces, neenee not interested π.
Hey buddy,,I was thinking that the government probably cant even afford to buy the needed maintenance equipment,,so you hit the nail on the head about the need to raise revenue. Growing pains,,but damn,,I've driven lots of mining or logging roads with loads of heavy truck traffic in way better shape than that so called highway. Take care Todd. Ttyl,,,Marlon
Yup and just going to up the speeding fines in Australia by $45 buckaroosβ¦not bad when 1 speed camera can pick up millions a year and thereβs plenty of cameras around hey..
Maybe they could tax the punters from the 'north' that are using the casinos that have been built and are being built. Like the ones I saw on Laos side of the Mekong near the Golden Triangle last year. But dream on! Also there seems to be plenty of concrete and steel available when comes to building the numerous ostentatious palace size homes in parts of Vientiane.
Money doesn't talk it swears ( in many languages).
Todd having visited Lao for 24 years annually and now in my second year of retirement here i have seen many changes. You mention roads and maintenance funding It goes far deeper than obvious corruption Embedded in the Lao pschye and mindset is the following saying and i shall spell it out and translate to English Lao Die Nuong Gee Et meaning I shall go to my grave an impoverished and poor man Proud in the fact that I have never had to Toil or Sweat throughout the course of my life Combined with the fact that whilst Their culture and religion takes total precedent over hard work education and learning this country will never develop into a developed nation. This Todd is why the Chinese are taking over at an ever increasing rate
I have just posted a comment and wish to clarify that I love this country and the people also the governing elite I would much prefer to live under the laws and rules of Laos than the country for which i was born This is why i am here . I would like to further add that i consider myself a PAYING GUEST in Laos as I have contributed many many hundreds of thousands of dollars to my establishing my life here and very much appreciate the Lao government for my being allowed to reside here
π―π₯ππ
The roads suck, but the views are awesome. Thanks for filming. ππ»
πroad
The no.13 road from luang prabang to Kasi is the most terrible road that I have driven π
Nice trip. You'd be checking the air filter( snorkel filter)r reasonably regular, out on theses dirt roads.. Kenno
