I can see that the ASEAN is useless when it comes to territorial conflicts among its members. The association has stayed absolutely silent with respect to China's aggression against several ASEAN member countries. The association cannot be counted on when it comes to conflicts of this sort. During Arroyo's time there was proposal, Philippines, Vietnam and China had deal to explore oil in the eez of the Philippines in Spratly islands. Meaning China itself did not really own that part of the water. China used Vietnam for some kind of variable as part of Spratly so China can stay in the Island. Now China is trying stealing 2nd Thomas Shoal. China is truly greedy and wise.

The Philippines' response to the continued harassment and attacks by the Chinese Communists' Coast Guard is very weak and pitiful. It has the appearance of a badly overpowered victim of a more powerful bully getting pushed around and meekly looks down to the ground and unwilling to CONFRONT the attacker.
On the same token, the United States which is supposed to come to the rescue of the Philippines when and if it is attacked has been standing on the side unable to make a decision.
An attack using water cannons that could break windshields, has the potential to damage other parts of the boat and injure personnel are enough for a defensive action from both the Philippines and United States. With a President of the United States who is perceived by the world and by the Chinese as a very WEAK president has simply ignored the Chinese and its abusive activities towards the Philippine Forces.
With the above pre conditions, the Chinese Communists will continue to act as the BIG BULLY in and around the South China Sea making the United States look very WEAK indeed.
As to the response by Batongbacal that more things have to be considered before activating the Philippine-US Mutual Defense Treaty….that is a bunch of CRAP.
