Well, this is really questionable stuff. Which is better – to do something and fail or to not do anything at all? Yes, China wasted certain amount of money, made failed railway lines but if you look in history most of USA railways faded away too after growth boom. Over-expectation isnt new thing.

I rode the high speed train from Shanghai to Beijing. It was wonderful. I hate that the USA does not have anything close to the one I rode 10 years ago. BUT it has to make sense.
A country has the full right to expand its infrastructure. at some point, people are going to start living there. what is wrong with that. I don't understand why that is questionable? Dont run your western agenda to criticize someone else's success.
Developing infrastructure in a large area is an expensive and challenging process that Singapore will never understand.

And the U.S. cant even keep their trudging along trains on time. Instead of investing our tax money into upgrading our infrastructure our politicians are giving it away to foriegn governments.
The Nancao station and the Mengzhuang station mentioned, are not stations of the intercity high-speed railroad, but commuter train stations from downtown Zhengzhou to the airport area. They were abandoned only because the subway was built next to them: the subway was more frequent, so fewer people took the train and there was no need for the stations to remain open.

China Railway Group has a debt of 6 trillion yuan, but its assets exceed 9 trillion yuan, and its debt ratio does not exceed 70%. In 2023, China Railway Group's net profit has turned positive, reaching 3.3 billion yuan. If China Railway Group wants to make huge profits, it is very easy, just increase the price per kilometer from 0.5 yuan to 0.6 yuan (0.08USD).
