On the heart of Bangkok’s world-renowned culinary scene is a market often called Khlong Toei. It is one of many world’s largest Moist Markets, and one of many final surviving in a world metropolitan heart. Khlong Toei is open 24 hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a 12 months, and each hour sees new components arriving from all corners of Southeast Asia and a rhythm solely understood by those that work inside the famous- or infamous- market. So to know Khlong Toei, we spent a full cycle- 24 hours- contained in the slender alleys, joined by cooks, clients, historians and employees to attempt to depart with some type of image of the market that feeds Bangkok.

Only one location- Khlong Toei Market ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/eQq4HnZX7EoP4xim8 )
FYI here are the pins for the Isaan restaurant owned by the family of Wan Di: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MSYiUFCi5Hpv4LiF9 …and Canvas: https://maps.app.goo.gl/k47vXva3pVrCMGbz5
I tried to map out everywhere we filmed within the market to give some pointers on where to find stuff- if you look closely, in a few of the very first shots, you'll see me holding a pen and notepad. That didn't work. It failed hilariously- I ended up with a few lines drawn and the single word "ducks". It's a maze, stuff moves around and every few hours, the entire market rearranges itself. Good luck. Just go in and get lost, that's the fun of it, you'll probably find stuff we didn't even see.
We can blame the westerners. They are the ones who disregard the markets as backwards and dirty.
Giving us Asians and others people from around the globe the perception that if we have to modernized we have to remove wet markets.
Because they place the "standards" of what is "modern."
Because many from the poorer countries look up to the west some even glamorized it to the point that anything that doesn't feel western is "backwards."
Epic!
I brought my son on a trip to Thailand and Khlong Toei was one of the top things he needed to see. As you've said in the video, it is a spectacular, amazing, chaotic, stunning (and not just the smell) place that is something you will never forget. It is everything opposite of the supermarket where I'm forced to buy good but crappy food. Its the reason things taste better in Thailand. It is the beating heart of great food. The day Khlong Toei closes is the day the food dies. The video was fantastic and be shown to every pro-big box store shopper. Keep up the fantastic job!
WOW, I’m glad you made this video. This too is one of my happy places in Bangkok, if not the whole world. When I travel I love to visit the local fresh markets. I believe you can learn more about the people, the city and its culture byvisiting these markets were local people shop. Khlong Toei, definitely is not a place for everyone. As mentioned with the many adjectives used in this video Khlong Toei can be overwhelming and be a sensory overload for the average tourist. Khlong Toei is the true definition of a wet market (I do not recommended wearing open shoes there). Anytime I have been there I am usually the only foreigner (farang) there. This is truly where local Thai people shop for food. I know having been there it is impossible to show everything you will see in this market especially some things that are not suitable for everyone to see. Unfortunately for me it’s been a few years since I have been able to visit the market, good to know they are open 24 hours a day, I always tried to get there early not knowing this. Now I’m looking forward to my next visit to Bangkok.
I love your work! Beautiful approach and poetic. keep up the great work my friend!
OTR deserves to be a college, for credit course. It’s that important.
Nice Video I have seen 😊
It’s a vision of a farang who thinks he’s bringing something new about Thailand but it’s just a western vision full of money for westerners:) bullshit
I live just across rama 4 from khlong toei market. Love going there, the produce is so much better and 10x cheaper than the supermarkets in bangkok
And because its local so the environmental impact is minimal
หมดแก้ว ยาดองนี่สุดมาก😊
Just amazing! I don't know how you could stay up. My Thai wife isn't even sure of what some of the things you picked up are!! Will have to go, next time in Bangkok.
Adam, your passion for food, especially Thai food and history is unprecedented. Your knowledge and passion is unsurpassed and you will get to a million subscribers before long. Also, the government of Thailand just need to give you honorary Thai citizenship, bc I feel you are more Thai than most Thais.
Brotha you gotta try and please learn the language and learn it good!!! Your cinematography is already top notch. If you could truly connect with these people and show an insight no one else can provide on youtube, I think you've got a golden ticket. Connect with the people!! You run an an amazing channel, and there's so much content not made yet its crazy
Remarkable guys. That was so intersesting. Love your work.
Very enjoyable, lived in Bangkok a long time, never made it to Khlong Toei , will go after Songkran, thankyou.
Thanks for bringing me back to Khlong Toei. one of the best wet markets in the world. It will be a tragedy to see it disappear but sadly it probably will. I've travelled the world for 50+ years and whether in Europe, Asia or South America they are the first place I try to visit to feel the heart and soul of a new city. And so many are being driven out by "big food"
Do you know that the present day Klong Toei was the old city of Paknam or Samut Prakarn before being relocated to the present location due to construction of the Bangkok port. The old Paknam (or present day Kloytoei) was a maritime city of Siam connecting the world.
And about a hundred year ago, the railway was built and operated connecting this area and Bangkok train station.
So back then, this area was the sea-land trading point since Ayutthaya era.
One of your best Videos👌👌👌👌👌
We walked through here, was interesting, didn't see any other tourists lol
I agree with the last lady that you interviewed with, but all of them are great all of them probably around my age anyway I was there back in the sixty almost as sixty years ago.
This is another great episode of Thai culture and cuisine.
This here in the info even more than half of Thais today do not know of…
13:44 OOOF!
My mum used to go to khlong toei market back in the day. She would head for around 2am-4am to get some freshly slaughtered meat. She used to sell moo ping and gai tord with khao neaw on the street. Thailand was a different country back then. I think supermarkets are the death of genuinely good produce. I mostly grew up in the UK and noticed how naive and weak peoples relationship with food is here. There's no respect for it and it certainly does do my head in. Personally I do think that getting rid of these types of markets in the name of civilisation is just an excuse to take away people freedoms to good food and have them rely on the slop you get at a supermarket
เป็นตลาดท้องถิ่น ที่มีชื่อเสียงเรื่องราคาถูก ของกรุงเทพฯ แต่คนอยู่เขตอื่นไม่ค่อยไปกันหรอกค่ะ
This is an AMAZING video. Wow. The commitment you put into this is next level. Thank you for this content!
Do an episode about first/oldest Western, Japanese, Indian restaurant in Thailand.. should be interesting
This channel is underrated. It deserves millions of subscribers and views. Great job!
The food they ear is fresh. Unlike us in the west. Dried, ultra processed food. Our fresh food is very rarely fresh. The meat and fish repackaged when the out of date has expired. I grow my herbs and the difference is amazing.
and until recently, opening the land, running it as a market of any kind is becoming 'trendy' for landlords…flea markets are mushrooming all over the country, also, probably, as a financial way out for many.
I follow your story few times and I would give you a big thumb for your work. U not only took people walking along your story but a interesting knowledge or history behind your story from A to Z. U should get A-1 along with your story. Adam, you really are one of the kind.
Wet market is so great, top
Great place 👍
I cannot believe you guys let us watch this for free
Wonderful piece, love the channel. Done a 24 hour shoot myself and your description of the end was spot on ; )).
Another triumph , and thats an understatement !!!! Just so good
Just came across the documentary, haven't watched the whole video, yet I wanted to comment lol I gave this video a ''liked" just because 9.39 minutes, I saw a cat is sleeping. so cute and this is my cat mom energy to you LMFAO
There is a delightfully oddball Japanese anime series that is set (loosely) in a post-War Japanese "shopping arcade" that is a similar market, although much smaller and largely retail, not wholesale, and is secretly a magical portal to many fantasy worlds. Under the silliness it captures the sense of the market of a place full of life, and yet also passing already into the past.

Way do you walk around with a backpack
i always wonder if you understand thai or laos? I never see any translators?
I mean, why are you so confident that animal rights activists who are against wet-market sale and slaughter are okay with supermarket meat? I've never met an animal cruelty or anti-bad-farming activist (or however you want to call them) who's okay with animal cruelty or eating meat so long as it comes from a supermarket. My understanding is that it's a blanket opposition towards cruel animal husbandry and slaughter practices, supermarket or wet market or local farm. And for that matter, I'm not saying small farmers and farmers' markets need to disappear, but I find it weird to take the position that animal cruelty is worth it so long as it's the price we pay for saving some jobs. I think that in the modern world, we can certainly do – or at least aspire to – both.
I do think food Markets in general are going to evolve especially with the Issue of Supermarkets in being unfair to farmers and farm to table movements becoming more widespread. The term "Wet Market" is a issue but it does bring up a point of presentation. In order for places like this to survive localisation has to continue.
