Why does the Philippines wrestle to draw overseas funding and create job alternatives for Filipinos? On this episode, I sit down with Orion Perez, a former OFW who spent 24 years in Singapore, to debate the systemic challenges dealing with the nation and what it should take to unlock actual financial progress.
Singapore’s rise wasn’t unintended—it was strategic. Beneath Lee Kuan Yew, the nation embraced overseas funding, prioritized infrastructure, and created an atmosphere the place companies thrived. On this dialog, we focus on whether or not the Philippines can take an identical path or if outdated insurance policies, just like the 60/40 rule, will proceed to carry it again.
We dive into subjects like:
✅ Why OFWs go away and what could be executed to maintain them house
✅ The impression of the 60/40 overseas funding rule on enterprise progress
✅ How infrastructure and authorities insurance policies have an effect on job creation
✅ Classes the Philippines can study from Singapore’s financial mannequin
✅ Steps the federal government and people can take to drive reform
In case you’re within the financial way forward for the Philippines, whether or not you are an OFW, enterprise proprietor, or investor, this can be a must-watch!

Need new Constitution and need Honest Politicians with Integrity…but people choose the wrong people to serve them, they choose those who wants to rule them. Politicians with Vision and Love for the country as simple as that…..
This topic has been on my mind frequently, especially in recent times. The significant wage disparity among Filipinos is a persistent concern. I can't help but ponder the correlation between widespread bribery and the low wages in the Philippines. The sheer number of OFWs and the trend of entertainment industry figures transitioning into politics seem to highlight a deeper systemic issue. When financial stability is elusive, what options are left? Moreover, the healthcare situation adds another layer of complexity – the coverage and costs can be overwhelming, particularly for breadwinners facing illness. Many many thanks for covering this topic.
Educated electorates is the fix now how to get there with education comes the spirit to be self governing giving the right mind set to vet potential leaders. CoRRECTtheCONSTITUTION
REPORMAsaSALIGANGbatas
Constitution to LEGISLATION (ECONOMIC SYSTEM)
House of Representatives
Senate
#Conclusion
Philippines really need more Repormistang Illustrados like Orion.
The potential of the Philippines is in the young population of the country.
What I like to see is, the government needs to distribute the wealth and businesses evenly between 3 big islands.
Most of the infrastructure are built mostly in LUZON AND SOME IN VISAYAS.
MINDANAO somehow always gets the end of the tail. Mindanao is rich in natural resources and has a thriving agriculture.
Somehow, these young generation especially those with lower education must be put to a production
job such as merchandise business like the Amazon. I heard Amazon would like to build a distribution center.
Instead of pawning these people to the Middle East to work as a nanny finding themselves rape, discriminated, abused and
sometimes being killed.
philippines needs physical infrastructures such as mega bridges, tunnels, roads, and viaducts to finally connect Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and palawan, so my country will finally become one country – one people, one nation and one God. The Internet of Things 10 years ago helped, but it is not enough; with mega physical infrastructures, the country will finally belong to 1st world country soon. No more rebellions in the name of religion, nor communsm…no more domestic helpers abroad or nurses or construction laborers leaving their families behind to work abroad. All we need is political will and prayers, @G5 Philippines, thanks very much for this meaningful interview, please keep it coming, love from 12 million overseas filipino workers
The stupid politicians in the philippines is to blame….many of them are involved in business and are partners with foreign companies…they make big profit by lowering the standards in salaries etc. many of big Filipino entrepreneurs who are in politics as well are greedy monsters….
not likely
Hello both, my first time listening to both your very interesting conversations. I agree that corruption would not be answer to better progress, just look at China, even Korea, Japan & Taiwan where politicians often caught for corruption. While I believe that foreign investment is important but is not most important factor but meritocracy. Just look at East Asia, or even Vietnam now rising, and also in America and Western Europe, where is often not the political leader, but that excellent "senior & middle" management of government, though corrupted, always makes the right decision, long term for the country. Just like any successful corporation, not so much of C-levels but the 2 – 3 layers below them that make the difference, even if they have most average workers.
Reason why Malaysia and many places in South East Asia not keep up with East Asia is affirmative action and not investing enough in educating their population.
And @G5Philippines,, there been academic study (by South American economist – Hernando de Soto) that showed how some countries over the centuries changed the relatively laid back farming populations to entrepreneurs through "land reforms" (started from France, Germany, then Japan copied, later Taiwan & China), where small plots of land given to farmers who keep what they sow, and within 1-2 generations created who generations of competitors.
If Philippines could reform to adopt meritocracy, and then land reforms, am sure could change it to the next Asian economic Tiger.
yes, when im not around anymore. 3 decades probably
This is an extremely slow long interview.
Filipinos are like Indians. Delusional pride while not doing what's necessary. The Philippines will never catch up with Thailand, let alone Singapore. Even with massive systemic changes, unless with major cultural shifts, it will never happen.
Is he shouting?
Pinoy Pride hinders development by validating the Filipino no matter what.
Singapore?! Really?! Philippines can’t even catch up with Vietnam, much more Singapore. The biggest problem in the Philippines are the Filipinos. 31M to 32M voted the Uniteam. The Philippine government & the few super rich are intentionally keeping the Filipino masses poor to enslave them & leave them powerless.
As a proud Filipino who spent much time in Singapore (not as much as your guest though), the quick answer is … Pinas can certainly catch up in a number of ways, but there is far too many differences/gaps between the two countries to fairly set Singapore as a “target” to replicate.
But progress is feasible.
A massive effort to scrub the corruption culture, political cronyism , and a gargantuan leap-forward in education …..will be one of the first building blocks that needs to happen before many other improvements can be realized. without that …game over.
Don't give up Mr Orion keep on fighting for the good of the country.
