Teochew or Chaozhou and Shantou aren't Canto culture… they are Hakka/Min culture…… Canto literally means Guangdong, which is the language spoken by people from Guangdong….

I'm from Singapore, Teochew-POH LENG. There were nine sub-group in Teochew community mainly, TEO YEO, POH LENG, TEO ANN, THENG HAI, JIAO PHENG, HUI LAI, ANN SHUN, KEK YEO and HAI YEO which had merge or else and only 8 subgroup remain as I understand from my uncle from Hong Kong.

Fyi, I like mathematics and I learned my multiplication table in teochew which much faster than in English.I used to admire my uneducated parents who r good in calculation.
My great great grandfather came to Singapore and sent my grandfather to China to finish his Imperial Examinations. ON the way back he caught pneumonia on the ship and died. He was 33 years old and married with 5 children. My grandmother, who became a widow, divided the piece of land in Singapore he left her into 20 small plots and leased them out to tenants who could build their own house. She then opened a grocery store to served them, which became a supermarket of sorts to the estate around her land. After about 2 decades she built 3 bungalows for her 3 eldest sons. The land was gazetted by the government when Singapore became independent.
