Thai baht is actually preferred over there in Laos, not exclusively in that area you visited but in the whole area of Laos.
Laos is its own country in Southeast Asia, but because it’s right next to China and they’ve got a lot of economic and political stuff going on, China’s influence in Laos has been creeping up big time.
With the whole Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China’s been throwing a ton of money at infrastructure projects in countries like Laos. They’re dumping cash into things like railways, roads, and dams, so Laos is starting to rely on them more and more. Some people even feel like Laos is getting pulled hard into China’s orbit because of all this.
Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries: Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Kenya, Ethiopia, Angola, Djibouti, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, etc.

What a splendid video! The comparison with Macau is not, in my opinion, entirely warranted however. Loads of fine colonial architecture is found in the former Portuguese enclave.

Chinese medias are even more critical of this place. According to their claims, this is a hub for kidnapping and scam call centers targeting mostly Chinese.
Those definitely exist to some degree, but I feel like their main motivation is just to dissuade people from gambling there.

Chinese are building HORRIBLE buildings. How can you call them beautiful? They show no respect for the local history. Those buildings are vulgar, look like a b-series plastic amusement park and have no sense of elegance or architectural meaning. It all sucks so much.
This is an eye opening. Very interesting visit indeed. I’ve been to Macao, live for good month in China and went to Hong Kong too. This place indeed look quite similar to Macao and the only difference is that it still under development.
I went to sihanoukville , Koh Rong and Siem Reap as a solo female traveler too couple of years back and it was heavily under construction by a lot of Chinese company in Sihanoukville. Totally different sight to Laos as shown in this video.

Laos is supposed to be a less wealthy SEA country but its so strange to see so many nice cars in Laos haha, seems like a Lamborghini Urus right behind you at the casino and a row of higher end cars at the hotel and everywhere you go, it's so strange that we don't even see that many exotics in Singapore and more majority Toyota/Honda/Benz/BMW. Almost feels like a Utopia in the middle of the rural towns of SEA! Really mind boggling considering the average wage of Laos probably couple hundred USD per month
